The Origin of the Word “Hurricane”

Friends:

My friend, Photographer Randy Richards, sent me an email about the origin of the word “hurricane.” So I did a little research. This comes from www.helium.com by Frances Jock:

“There are two possible origins of the word “hurricane.” According to one source, the word “Hurricane” is derived from the Spanish word “huracn.” The origin of which is the Carib term for “God of Evil”. Other sources, however, postulate that the word is derived from the name of the Mayan storm god, “Hurakan.” According to the Popol Vuh, which recounts the Mayan Creation Myth, Huracan (from Mayan Jun Raqan) is the ancient Mayan weather god of wind, storm, and fire. Hurakan is “the one-legged”, and one of three creator deities, collectively called “the Heart of Heaven,” that participates in three attempts at creating humanity first from mud, and then wood. The final and successful creation resulted in the creation of mankind from maize.

The Creation Myth also reveals that Hurakan caused the Great Flood after the first humans angered the gods. According to the myth, he lived in the windy mists above the floodwaters and repeatedly called forth the earth until land came up from beneath the seas. His “one legged” appearance refers to one of his legs having been transformed into a snake. His appearance features a snout-like nose, resembles that of the Aztec god Tezcatlipoca. Hurakan can also be spelled Hurrican, Huracan, & Harakan.”

Well, it appears this angry God of wind and storm is snaking into the Gulf as I write, a strong Category 4 hurricane. May he have mercy upon us…

Until next time…

Warmly,
Dianne

Hi. Hurricanes, according to Maya, are a force that helped make life on our planet by churning things up in the ocean (where all planet life comes from); eventually giving rise to humanity. Hurricanes obviously displace/place more than humans, they are an essential part to our existence. Within a hurricane there is a tremendous amount of energy produced; mixed in with not only wind and rain. This energy is produced by so many forces coming together, including from our cosmos; tied in with our sun and moon, and possibly interstellarly inclusive with regards to other energy fields that may affect us from way off in our galaxy and universe. Relatively speaking, we are at mercy of God. We need to be careful when we build, as to why, how, when and where. Many times we blast things into space, especially around Cape of Florida not regarding how intense this is piercing our atmosphere, because of fear of not being first to explore, or fear of not spying on other countries ( or US), or fear of not making enough money that we have to send just another satellite to make our networks reach out to more customers, or fear that an asteroid will strike our Earth, etc. Then there are all those oil platforms, amongst so much more toxic stuff, everywhere, right at sea level. How un- level headed to believe God will help US, while we keep up this trend. God has helped US, that’s why God sends in the Hurricanes, to stir things up in oceans where all life is from. This churning up really helps save our oceans from the rampant death we have allowed by overfishing, toxic spills, even by motor boats as they whiz around on pleasure cruises, etc. Read some of the stuff on Livingcosmos.com, you will find a plethora of good articles on this subject. There are also a lot of other good articles on our WWW as well, which I will write about later.

Oh, and by the way, hopefully all will be well for you and yours during this hurricane season. Obey most if not all hurricane evacuation procedures, all will be well. Organize for better environmental awareness in and around this area. Hurricanes are summoned by human environmental factors, not just environmental factors of the atmospheric kind. The mix is part ours. God bless.

Dianne, (just re-read what I wrote) please don’t think I was talking about you being un-level headed, as I was referring to the un-level headed over builders of the area. Here in Los Angeles (Atzlan), we have a similar problem with Cabrakan, who is the Mayan God of earthquakes. Hopefully, things will calm down all over our Earth, as we realize our true importance as Humans, and stop, only trying to make a buck. Nothing wrong with money, only that with it we create/destroy so much, like giant termites. God bless.
