11-21-09 Signing at Barnes & Noble, Harvey, LA

11-21-09 Signing at Barnes & Noble, Harvey, LA

Friends:

This past weekend I had 5 book signings! It’s the holiday season and it’s a busy time! My first signing was on Saturday morning at 10am at Sam’s Club in Harvey, Louisiana. Fortunately, I live in Harvey so I didn’t have far to drive. Yay! I was positioned by the front entrance and they had a nice table set up for me, with a table covering and plants on either side. Sales were good and I moved a lot of books.

A big thank you to my 9 year old daughter, Eliana, for taking all the photos! Eliana was my helper extraordinaire, especially since I am still recovering from a sprained ankle. After a quick lunch at Sam’s Club, Eliana and a stop at Office Depot for more Sharpies to autograph with, Eliana and I headed to Maple Street Book Shop for a 2pm book signing. Marita Gentry, my illustrator, met me there. Thought we didn’t have the crowd we expected (it was raining and there was an LSU game), we still had fun.

Eliana and I headed home to rest a little bit and freshen up. My next book signing was at 7pm at Barnes & Noble in Harvey. Again, I didn’t have to drive far! Unfortunately, Marita was unable to join me. I had a marvelous crowd. It was packed!! I had fans come too! I performed Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach, telling the story with the help of children on stage and in the audience. We had a blast!

I sold a bunch of books. One parent said to me, “That was the best story time we have ever seen at Barnes & Noble!” Another girl, Brianna, told me that she came to my last book signing of The Cajun Cornbread Boy and she was going to come to the next one too! Brianna said she was a “fan for life.” :)

On Sunday, I had two book signings scheduled. The first one was at 10am at Sam’s Club in Metairie, Louisiana on Airline Highway. At first, sales were slow. People were rushing through, trying to get their shopping done before the New Orleans Saints game at 12pm. But in the second hour, sales were phenomenal. I even had a woman who loved my books so much she called me later and asked me to come to her son’s school. She’s going to come to my next book signing this upcoming Saturday after Thanksgiving! :)

Eliana had a big fan too! A little boy named RJ fell in love with her and didn’t want to leave her side! He was the cutest thing! He wouldn’t stop staring at her!

My next signing was in Kenner, a hefty drive from my house so Eliana and I decided to kill time in Metairie (next to Kenner) by shopping at Lakeside Mall. The mall was filled with shopper bees, buzzing around from store to store, spending all their “honey.” The mall was, of course, decorated for Christmas and it was hard not to be in a holiday mood, especially since we saw (on a TV in the Food Court) the Saints beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and become a 10-0 undefeated team! Go Saints!

My last signing was at Sam’s Club in Kenner from 4pm to 6pm. Shoppers were in a good mood, partly due to the Saint’s nice win. Here, I had the best sales of the weekend. My books went like hotcakes and I had to ask the manager to bring out more books. Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach sold out and I thought some ladies were going to fight over the copies! Fortunately, I had enough for everyone. One lady bought 12 books as Christmas gifts! Thank you to the Hezeau family!

11-19-09 Gobble up a Turkey Treat Display Board

11-19-09 Gobble up a Turkey Treat Display Board

Friends:

For Eliana’s class, I created a “Gobble Up a Turkey Treat” board. It’s so cute and easy to make.

Materials:
Cardboard display board
Cardboard cake tray
Candy canes
Construction paper
Googly eyes
Markers
Glue stick
Hot glue

11-17-09 Turkey Treat up Close

11-17-09 Turkey Treat up Close

Directions:
Using a cardboard cake plate turned upside down so that you the brown (and not the silver or gold) is on top, glue a head, beak, wattle, and wings cut from construction paper. Glue the Googly eyes onto the turkey’s head. Glue candy canes in a “heart” shape as the feathers above the turkey’s body. Use hot glue for the heavy items such as the cardboard body and the candy cane wings and feathers. Using markers, color inside the “feathers.” Kids can just grab a turkey treat and pull. It’s a great way to welcome Thanksgiving. Gobble! Gobble!

Until next time…

Friends:

I had a wonderful visit with Southfield School in Shreveport, Louisiana. When I arrived at my hotel, there was an Edible Arrangement waiting for me in my hotel room from Jean Thomas, the Southfield School librarian. So sweet!

After a full day at school signing books, attending their preview and tea, Victoria and her husband, Julio Rios, invited me to dinner with the family. We ate a fantastic sushi dinner at Tokyo, where we were joined by Rishea and her daughter, Rachel. They are such wonderful people! After dinner, Victoria and her girls, Catherine and Caroline, invited me to their house. We visited for a long time. The Rios house is absolutely gorgeous.

11-15-09 Giving Thanks Tree

11-15-09 Giving Thanks Tree

TOGETHER TIME ACTIVITY: THE “GIVING THANKS” TREE
This year, I am creating a “Giving Thanks” tree. As thanksgiving guests walk in, they will be asked to write down, on a maple leaf, one thing they are thankful for. These leaves will be affixed to a large tree. When the tree is completed, everyone will be able to read all the blessings on the tree. It is a beautiful way to give thanks for our bounty.

Materials:
Science Display Board
Large paper bag or brown butcher block paper
Paper in autumn colors: red, orange, yellow, green, brown
Maple leaf pattern http://familyfun.go.com/printables/turkey-maple-leaf-pattern-for-thanksgiving-703422/
Cardstock or poster board
Glue stick or school glue
Double stick tape

Instructions:
Freehand draw a large tree on a large paper bag or on butcher block paper. Glue it to the middle of the display board. Create a maple leaf traceable pattern on cardstock or poster board. Fold a sheet of “autumn” paper into four, trace the maple leaf. Cut it out. This will yield four maple leaves. You can also trace a small child’s hand and use that as a “leaf” pattern. Create leaves in various Autumn colors. Write the words “Giving Thanks” on each side of the display board or print them out and glue them to the board.

As guests come in, have them write one blessing on a leaf. Use double stick tape to affix the leaf to the tree. Soon, the tree will be full of blessings, things they are thankful for. May those leaves “fall,” fly away, and become someone else’s blessing.

To make the Giving Thanks Tree even more special, consider donating money in the amount of the leaves on the tree to a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, a battered women’s shelter, the Red Cross, or your favorite charitable organization.

Friends:

Today I was at Cherry Books in Thibodaux, Louisiana with my illustrator, Marita Gentry promoting our new book, Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach. Cherry Books is a beautiful little independent book store in Thibodaux on Canal Boulevard. The inside is so cute and they change the decor of children’s section to reflect the seasons. Look at this fantastic holiday Nutcracker!

Marita illustrated live while I told the story of Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach. The girls were given roach antennae tiaras while the boys were given party hats. They played story shakers and danced with me. It was so much fun!

After the book signing, Antonio, Eliana and I went to Thibodauxville, a big festival that takes place in downtown Thibodaux. My friend, Debbie Ruester and her daughter, Rebecca, were there and we visited with them for a while. The weather was perfect, the food was delicious and we ate a hearty lunch of Louisiana festival food: brisket sandwich, meat pies, Cajun sausage sandwich, bread pudding, and peanut butter fudge. YUM!

Friends:

Today, I performed two school shows at Hynes Charter School on Gentilly Boulevard in New Orleans. It was my first school visit since I sprained my ankle last week. I arrived at the school and an army of helpers – teachers and parents helped me unload and set up my show. My first show was for grades 4-8. I performed “Haunted Louisiana” for the students and ended with the story “The Ghost of Mable Gable” from my Scared Silly Book. I had a good time with the students.

My second show was for grades PK-3. With the help of some very deft parents, my backdrop was changed lickety-split and I performed my “Jump, Jiggle & Jam” show. This show features tons of audience participation with rhythm, rhyme and rap.

I told “The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza” and “Rockin’ Three Billy Goats.” I also sang “Peanut Butter and Jelly Jam,” an original song inspired by the classic.

The reason I was at Hynes is because of my #1 little fan, Jordyn. She and her mother, Erica, are big supporters and got me at the school. A special thank you to Sandra Roach, Jordyn’s teacher, for arranging and coordinating the visit. Sandra took care of me, even feeding me an international feast and dessert! I even had my own ice bucket filled with drinks!

But that rascally roach pretended to be sick whenever Madame Poulet asked him to come along and help forage. Friends:

On Tuesday, November 3, 2009, I went to see the Michael Jackson movie, This Is It, and fell down the dark movie theater stairwell, spraining my left ankle. I didn’t even get to see the movie! I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Two days later, I had to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina for the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) conference for a book signing at ABC-Clio Libraries Unlimited and to present my Story Fest story theater workshop on Saturday, November 7.

It wasn’t easy but I did it! Fortunately, airports and airlines are so accommodating to people with injuries or disabilities. I received nothing but kindness and assistance my entire trip. A special thank you to these librarians: Bridget Kratt from Nebraska for her help from the airport to the Hilton hotel and throughout the conference; Nancy Dickinson, Allison Roberts & Diane Chen from Tennessee for all their help wheeling me to and fro and bringing me to the closing party; and Lisa Upper from North Carolina for helping me throughout my Story Fest Session. You gals totally ROCK!

The Hilton Hotel was so accommodating and everyone there treated me like royalty! Edward Walter, the manager when I checked in, helped me to my room and even prepared an ice bag for my foot! Throughout my stay, I was met with nothing but kindness and compassion and a fresh bag of ice each day from Mirjana, the 6th floor housekeeper. What superb service!

The workshop culminated in two performances. One half of the room performed “The Turtle Who Could Not Stop Talking” while the other half of the room performed “The Frog and the Ox.” Each group was able to enjoy the other group’s performance.

Lisa Upper from Caldwell Academy in Greensboro, North Carolina was my “official” photographer and volunteer room attendant. Thank you, Lisa, for all your help! I ended with the story, “The Viper,” from my newest book, Scared Silly: 25 Tales to Tickle and Thrill, and I raffled away nearly ALL my books to the librarians, which they LOVED. :)

On Saturday night, my friends, Nancy Dickinson, Allison Roberts, and Diane Chen, picked me up and helped me get to the Imaginon for the AASL 2009 closing party. What a party it was!! I had a FABULOUS time, dancing in and on my wheelchair! No stopping this diva! LOL

Friends:

The moon was full and we are in New Orleans! That, right there, is a recipe for a special Halloween brew! As a family, we decided to depict Heroes and Villains. My husband Antonio was Batman, my nine year old daughter Eliana was Wonder Woman, I was Cat Woman, my nineteen year old daughter Soleil was Harley Quinn (Joker’s girlfriend and partner in crime), and Soleil’s boyfriend Tomas was The Joker.

Soleil and Tomas headed for Voodoo Fest, a huge music festival in New Orleans City Park. Antonio, Eliana and I went to our church’s Trick-O-Trunk, an annual Halloween celebration where parishioners park their cars in the church parking lot and decorate their trunks. There is music, games, a haunted house, and food. It’s like a big festival and the kids only have to walk from trunk to trunk to go trick-or-treating. So much fun!

Friends:

My last day at Dawes was a wonderful one. I had three classes and then I was invited to attend a Halloween party by Lilly (my friend, Juliet Bond’s daughter) and her third grade teacher, Ms. Brennan. My first classroom visit was Sr. Puentes’ Kindergarten TWI (Two Way Immersion) class. They are always such a fun and cooperative group. They followed every instruction to a tee. What cuties too!

Plus, Sr. Puentes and his assistant are so sweet! I loved visiting this class!

Next, it was on to Ms. Sovich’s 2nd grade classroom. The kids were so excited to see me, giving me hugs and sitting on the run in anticipation of the class’ upcoming activities. I told the story of “Sody Sallyraytus,” taught them Zydeco dancing, and did some role playing drama activities with them. They were great dancers and Ms. Sovich even videotaped the students doing the two step! Too cool!

Thank you for having me at your school, Dawes! You were awesome! A special thank you to Juliet Bond (the Dawes PTA coordinator of this residency), Ms. Jicha (school librarian), Ms. Bradley (principal), Ms. Johnson (school secretary), and all the teachers and staff at Dawes who made my visit so pleasant and memorable. Also, a huge thank you to the Dawes PTA for funding my visit!! I’d love to come back! :) And thank you to all the Dawes Kindergarten, First, and Second grade students. Dawes Elementary ROCKS!
