1-19-10 Performing for Quitman Lower Elementary 1st & 2nd grades

Friends:

Today I had the privilege of doing a school visit and a professional development workshop for Quitman Lower Elementary in Quitman, MS.

1-19-10 A teacher plays a lion in "Anansi Shares Wisdom w the World"

Angie Ledbetter, the Assistant Principal, was my contact person. My GPS misguided me to the wrong side of town and I called Angie on her cell phone in a panic. She was sweet and guided me in and greeted me upon my arrival. She told me that Carol Satterfield, a teacher and big “Fan of Dianne,” drove all the way from North Mississippi to see me and was spending the day at the school. How cool is that?!

Right before my first show, the Principal, Mr. Bounds, greeted me, welcomed me to the school, and introduced me to the students. I performed 2 shows. The first show was for pre-K and K. The second was for 1st and 2nd grades. It was so much fun and the students had a blast!

After my second show, Angie and another teacher, Tootsie, took me to lunch. We ate at a local restaurant, Skidmore’s Old Tyme Butcher Shop and Grill. They served delicious hot plates. I had fried chicken, cornbread, mac and cheese, green beans and peach cobbler. Talk about a Southern cooked meal!

Lunch was so much fun. We laughed and laughed. Everyone that walked in the door could have been a book character! When we were finished eating, Tootsie said, “Now we have to clean our table and scrape off our plates.” It was like a flashback to junior high. So I took my dishes to the slop bucket and scraped off my plate. There was a big sign above the table where the bin for the dirty dishes was. It said, “Please do not throw your metal forks into the trash.”

Then Tootsie told me to read the fine print. Underneath that it said, “Throw away your spit cup please.” I’m not making this up! Better be careful… The white styrofoam cup you think is your drink might actually be someone’s spit cup! Eeeew. Of course, I HAD to take a picture!

After lunch, we went back to school and I took a tour down the halls. The schools is one that really works to integrate the arts and the walls show it! There was art everywhere!

A “Learning is Fun” attitude permeates the school’s atmosphere, from the administration to the staff to students. Quitman Lower Elementary’s teachers are enthusiastic and committed to their classrooms.

In the afternoon, the teachers came into the multipurpose room for my Story Fest workshop. It was so much fun sharing my signature story theater techniques with them. They were such great participants!

They really embraced the story theater warm-up exercises, including Mr. Bounds, the school’s principal!

I enjoyed their energy and willingness to step out of their comfort zones.

When we were finished with the warm-up exercises, I divided the group in half and they created their own story theater. One group performed “The Turtle Who Could Not Stop Talking.”

The other group performed my brand new story theater script, adapted from my new book, Mama’s Bayou.

Afterwards, I signed tons of books and gave all the teachers reading posters. Every student received bookmarks. I really enjoyed my day at Quitman Lower Elementary. Thank you so much, Angie Ledbetter, for inviting me to Quitman. I love you and your school!

Tomorrow, I spend the day at Quitman Upper Elementary. Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne

Friends:

Mardi Gras Season begins on the Twelfth Night of Christmas every year, January 6. I had the privilege and honor of being a guest at a Mardi Gras ball! I was invited by my illustrator (of Mama’s Bayou) and dear friend, Holly Stone-Barker. It was my first Mardi Gras ball and I had a ball!

The ball was held at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, Louisiana. The Krewe of Excalibur rolls in Metairie on Friday, February 5, 2010. My husband, Antonio, and I were seated at the “Nemo” table. Holly’s mom, Diane, was a maid representing the Disney movie, Finding Nemo. Our table was loaded with favors and tons of gifts!

The pomp and circumstance began with a parade of breathtaking costumes, along with a history of the Krew of Excalibur, which is in its 9th year. The 2010 theme is “Knight-Time Stories” and the costumes represented favorite children’s stories that were also movies. There was “Dr. Seuss.”

“The Jungle Book” brought back childhood memories. I was in the play in elementary school, only my costume wasn’t as cool!

What I love about Mardi Gras is how rich in history it is. Many visitors to New Orleans don’t realize how much tradition is behind Mardi Gras’ culture. It’s not just about beads and throws and parades. It’s about family and honor.

After the presentation of the court, dinner was served buffet style. Then it was time to dance! Vince Vance and the Valiants were the “Knight-Time” entertainment. Antonio and I shook, shook, shook our booties. Thank goodness I brought my Footzy Rolls, roll-up flat shoes made just for occasions like these. My ankle is still weak from my sprain two months ago. I chucked the high heels and felt fine in flats!

Speaking of Vince Vance, I met him a couple of years ago. He came out into the audience and recognized me. I couldn’t believe he remembered me! He announced my name over the P.A. as “The Famous Storyteller Dianne de Las Casas” and had me join his girls on stage, singing “Love Shack.” Being on stage is no new place for me… LOL It was fun!

It was a grand evening and we partied until 2:30am! What a great way to continue celebrating my birthday! :) I really enjoyed meeting Toni, Holly’s friend. Toni had never met me and gave me the most gorgeous gifts! Her son, Nick, was a junior knight, like Holly’s son, Stephen. Toni, thank you! You are so sweet!

Friends:

My new professional book, Stories on Board! Creating Board Games from Favorite Tales, published by Libraries Unlimited, an ABC-Clio imprint, will be released in June 2010. It is now in production and the book cover has been designed. Here is a description of the book:

Friends:

It was a dark and stormy night… The rain poured and the winds lashed but still, family and friends came to my 40 and Fabulous Birthday Bash.

We had a fabulous food spread! The menu included mojo roasted pork, coconut cumin chicken, bacon sauteed haricot vert, beef brisket, pancit (Filipino noodle dish with vegetables and chicken), pesto & pine nut pasta, Vietnamese spring rolls, ham & parmesan latkes, chipotle deviled eggs, marinated asparagus, and caesar salad served in martini glasses. We also had hot chicken & sausage gumbo on the stove.

Eliana, my 9 year old chef, helped with a lot of the food preparation. It was her idea to pass hors d’oeuvres around. She passed around prosciutto wrapped asparagus, bacon gouda potato bites, parmesan cumin crisps, and fried Vietnamese eggroll bites.

Antonio, my husband, came up with the party decoration theme: Garnet & Gold. Garnet is January’s birth stone. He also came up with the bar and cocktail service. Yes, he was the bartender the whole night, serving screwdrivers, strawberry daiquiris, margaritas, red wine, and white wine.

On the appetizer table, we had mozzarella & roasted garlic chicken sausage, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, and lumpia, a Filipino eggroll with a sweet chili dipping sauce. The flowers on the table were sent to me from Marita Gentry and Holly Stone-Barker, the illustrators of my children’s books.

Friends:

In September, I did an author visit with an elementary school in Tennessee. Over the holidays, I received a big box of fan mail from the second, third, fourth, and fifth grades, about 300 letters. They were so much fun to read. I am going to send a letter back with a few goodies for the students. Here are highlights from my favorites:

“The book was especially great, but hearing and seeing the movements of the story in real life was better. That is all I have to say, Miss Dianne. Your friend, Ryan” – 3rd grade

“You were very funny. You need to go to every school! They would love to see you perform! Your Friend, Kristina” – 3rd grade

“I love the part when Madame Poulet ate Monsieur Roach. It was so funny, I nearly ran out of breath. Love, Tyler” – 4th grade

“You’re the greatest author in the world! When I was helping you, I felt like I was going to faint! Your friend, Kalita” – 4th grade

“I love you, Miss Dianne. I told my mom and family the story. They loved it so much that they made me tell it two times. Your best, Elizabeth” – 4th grade

“Thank you for coming. I’ve never met a real live author before! If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t know what it was about, because I didn’t buy a book. You’re pretty too. And how many years do you have to stay in college to be an author? I just want to know. But you’re really cool. If other authors came, and I had to pick a favorite, it would be you! You’re the best!!! Your friend, Courtney” – 4th grade

“Thank you for coming to see us. We loved your stories. We had a blast. You’re wonderful. I love your dancing and your song to get back at your brother. It was funny that you ate Ms. Pearson. Hope you come back. Your friend, Britney” – 4th grade

“I’m your best friend, Madison. You know what?? You’re one of my BFFLs – Best Friends for Life!!! Thank you for coming to our school. Love your friend, Madison” – 4th grade (who drew a picture of me on a horse)

“I liked the part when you pretended to sneeze on my teacher. I almost laughed my brains out!!! Your friend, Colten” – 4th grade

“I had some friends that came and spent the night with me last weekend. I showed them your story and they loved it. When I went to their house, I showed their parents and they laughed to death. Your #1 Fan, Aliyah” - 4th grade

“You are the best author and storyteller. I think you should come again and tell us another story. If people don’t like your stories, they are crazy. Your fan, Christian” - 4th grade

“At first, I thought that it was going to be boring but it was not. It was pretty cool. Your book, Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach was one of the funniest books I have ever read. Your friend, Ethan” – 4th grade

Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach

Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach

Book Review of Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach
By Kim Ranjbar
NewOrleans.com

One of the most difficult adjustments I have had to make since moving to New Orleans is the proliferation of roaches. In California, I had seen the pencil-eraser-sized German cockroaches, but never in my life had I been exposed to what is called a “palmetto.” These enormous cockroaches grow as large as 1 1/2 inches in length (I swear I’ve seen larger), form wings in adulthood (oh yes, they can fly) and are considered one of the fastest running insects. In a study at UC Berkeley in 1991, they were clocked at a record speed of 3.4 mph! I can’t tell you how many times palmettos have eluded my attempts to stomp them to death, only to scurry off into an invisible crack underneath my kitchen cabinets.

Never did I expect to find a children’s book about roaches, but not too long ago I discovered Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach by Dianne de Las Casas, author of The Cajun Cornbread Boy. She is a local writer and recording artist, residing in Harvey, Louisiana who has received critical acclaim from the American Library Association and is a performer at arts-in-education programs all over the state.

When I saw the cover of Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach, I couldn’t help but be tickled by a children’s book relating a tale between a chicken and a cockroach. As the story goes, Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach were once great friends who lived together in harmony, foraging for food and generally enjoying one another’s company. One day, Madame Poulet arises from bed early (as usual) and goes into Monsieur Roach’s bedroom to wake him to go and find more food. Monsieur Roach begins to moan and tells Madame Poulet that he is too sick to help. Madame Poulet, concerned about her good friend, tells him to stay in bed and get some rest so he can get better.

As soon as Madame Poulet leaves the house, what does that rascally roach do? He invites over all his cockroach friends to party, crying “Laissez le bon temps rouler!” After several days of feigning sick and throwing parties while Madame Poulet is gone, Monsieur Roach finally gets caught when Madame Poulet comes home early. Both her food and friend problems end in one fateful snap of her beak as she swallows up Monsieur Roach and all of his friends.

This folk tale is really well done with wonderful rhyming and repetition, something I deem invaluable for children’s stories, especially when reading aloud. The illustrations, by Marita Gentry, are bright and colorful, perfect for story-time page turning.

Best of all, I’ve learned that now, all I need to do to sort out anymore cockroach problems is to get myself a chicken!
