FALL HARVEST – UNEARTH FUN IDEAS!
By Dianne de Las Casas

Thanksgiving is a special time in the United States. It is a time we celebrate our bountiful harvests. Traditionally, that meant crops which kept families fed during harsh winters. Now it means all the blessings, big and little, we have to be thankful for. No matter what country you hail from, it is always the right time to give thanks! Here are some Fall Harvest ideas… unearth some fun! Have the kids help with holiday preparations.

Handprint Turkey Placecards
Trace your child’s hand on construction paper and create turkey placecards for the Thanksgiving table. The four fingers become the feathers while the thumb is the head and neck of the turkey. Simply draw the turkey’s features then have your child color the turkeys, feather, body and beak. Write your guest’s name on the turkey. Tape or glue a craft stick to the back of the turkey (you can do opposite hands and two turkeys back-to-back for a really nice effect). Pour salt or sugar in a small Dixie cup. Cover the salt/sugar with a thin layer of cinnamon. Place the stick in the cup. Voila! Not only is it super cute, it also lends that Fall fragrance to the air with the cinnamon.

Cardboard Tube Napkin Rings
Forget expensive napkin rings! Using a paper towel tube, cut a ring off about 1 to 1 ½ inches wide. Glue gold ribbon around the ring, covering the entire ring. Glue a small acorn, leaf, berry or other fall decoration on top. Fold napkins accordion style and slip them inside. They will fan out. Pretty! This is an easy project for kids to help with!

Pumpkin Bowl Floral Arrangement
This is one of the prettiest arrangements. It always gets “ooohs” and “aaahs” from guests. Get a large pumpkin and scoop out the insides. Place a goldfish bowl with water inside. Fill pumpkin with fresh, fall colors.

Glittery Mini Pumpkin Tealights
Get several miniature pumpkins and scoop out the insides. Once the insides are scooped out, take the pumpkins in a well-ventilated area and spray with adhesive glue. Sprinkle gold glitter all over the pumpkins and allow to dry. Place a tealight holder and a tealight inside for instant fall glamour! Place on a doily to catch the glitter.

Learn Napkin Folding
Having beautifully folded dinner napkins is a wonderful way to make your guests feel special and welcome. Why, you went to all that trouble for them! Pick simple, but elegant napkin designs and have your older children help. They will enjoy the activity and you will have one less thing to do! http://www.napkinfoldingguide.com/

Fall Tabletop
I love table runners and have several in different colors. Instead of a dedicated table cloth, try layering several table runners in Fall colors. The result is a patchwork that looks like a carpet of fall foliage! So pretty!

Pomander Power!
Once used in the Victorian era to mask odors, pomanders are now fragrant reminders of the holidays. A pomander is a citrus fruit studded with cloves. This is a craft that both of my daughters enjoyed. Get several oranges, lemons, and limes. Stud the fruit with cloves, covering the entire fruit or creating patterns. It is helpful to use a thimble or gloves when pushing the cloves into the fruit as they can be sharp, Place pomanders in a crystal or designer bowl and use as a centerpiece or attach a ribbon and hang in the doorways.

Have fun with fall and unearth some great ideas for bringing the holidays home!

11-16-10 Dianne enlists the help of the audience to pull The Gigantic Sweet Potato

Friends:

Marita and I did a special presentation of The Gigantic Sweet Potato, our new Fall 2010 book, at the Barnes & Noble store in Mandeville, Louisiana. The story time area was packed with little fans, both old and new!

11-14-10 Kid Chef Eliana eats a fried boudin poboy at the Oak Street Poboy Festival

Friends:

On Sunday, the family and I met some friends at the Oak Street Po Boy Festival in uptown New Orleans.

11-14-10 Maci gets her poboy on... her head

There were po boy vendors everywhere and tons of different kinds of po boys: hot sausage, shrimp and remoulade, roast beef debris, pork belly and pepper jelly, fried chicken, duck confit, shredded pork and gouda, and so many more! Eliana and I had to eat a fried boudin (Pronounced BOO-dan, it’s Cajun sausage stuffed with rice and meat) po boy! Talk about tasty!

The streets were so crowded, it was like Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras day!

11-14-10 Oak Street is as crowded as Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras!

But there were sights you could only experience in New Orleans, like second lining with a jazz band! Love the music and the festival atmosphere!

Here, Eliana takes a picture with the Saints “Whistle Man,” a famous New Orleans character present at every Saints home game. His whistle helmet is signed by many Saints players through the years.

Our day ended with a nice dinner at Cafe Granada with our friends, Karen, Barry and their daughter, Maci. It was a fantastic time for everyone! We had fun at the perfect po boy party! YUM!

Until next time…

11-13-10 Marita Gentry draws and Dianne de Las Casas tells the story with help from the audience

Friends:

This past Saturday, Marita Gentry and I had a special presentation of The Gigantic Sweet Potato at Barnes & Noble in Harvey, Louisiana. We had a wonderful crowd with lots of friends and fans showing up. Everyone really enjoyed Marita’s live illustration!

11-13-10 Marita draws Lily Mouse and a piece of Sweet Potato Pie!

I told the story with boisterous participation from the audience and it was a blast. When we were finished with the story, the kids lined up with the illustrations, creating a scene from the book of everyone pulling on the Gigantic Sweet Potato.

11-13-10 The drawings line up to create a scene in The Gigantic Sweet Potato!

Afterward, Ms. Jane French from Barnes & Noble, served cookies and mini Frappuccinos to all the kids. Then the kids colored and got their books signed by me and Marita. It was such a fun way to end my day! Thank you to all my friends, fans, and family for coming out to support us! We <3 U! Hugs to Jane French and the staff of Barnes & Noble for being so warm and hospitable.

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne

11-13-10 Dianne de Las Casas and Kid Chef Eliana signing books at A Tisket A Tasket in the French Quarter

Friends:

Kid Chef Eliana and I had a joint book signing this past weekend at A Tisket A Tasket gift shop in the French Quarter. Eliana signed her new cookbook, Eliana Cooks! and I signed my children’s books, The Gigantic Sweet Potato, Mama’s Bayou, Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach, and The Cajun Cornbread Boy.

From the moment we arrived, Eliana attracted attention! We were constantly busy, passing out samples of her Devil’s Food Monster Muffins and signing books.

11-13-10 There is a big crowd for Kid Chef Eliana!

I was so impressed by the way Eliana handled herself and spoke to people about her book. She sold 30 books in two hours! She’s such a pro! :)

I look forward to my next book signing with the coolest kid chef around!

Until next time…

10-31-10 Dianne & Karen, out for devilish fun

Friends:

My family did a big Halloween celebration on Saturday night but I love the holiday and love dressing up so when my friend, Karen, invited me to her house for an informal gathering, I leaped at the chance.

10-31-10 Meow!

Eliana’s cousin, Camrynn, was with us and she didn’t have a costume so I quickly threw one together for her. She and Eliana dressed as witches. Good thing I always have supplies on hand.

10-31-10 Camrynn, Maci & Eliana

Karen and her family were so cute. They dressed with a theme as devils. Check out her husband, Barry’s costume! Red hot wicked!

10-31-10 Barry the Devil, on fire!

Karen kept bragging about this haunted house in their neighborhood. So we walked around the corner… I was skeptical but WOW!

10-31-10 The Haunted House in Timberlane

Not only is the outside fully decorated…

10-31-10 Even the dead have to rest after all that Halloween partying

But the inside is too and the owners graciously allow visitors inside the monster mansion.

10-31-10 The entrance to the haunted house

Karen, her friend, Lydia, and I had to strike a pose before heading inside.

10-31-10 Dianne, Karen, Lydia & Broomhilda

First was a tour of the dining room. I loved this picture of me with Jeeves, the Butler. He’s kind of a staid gentleman and doesn’t say much…

10-31-10 Dianne & Jeeves, the Butler

There is sooo much going on, it’s hard to focus on one particular peculiarity. But I loved this mini haunted village in the dining room.

10-31-10 A haunted village

I loved how the fireplace was decorated. I sooo want that cobweb runner!

10-31-10 Eliana & Camrynn by the spooky fireplace

There were dancing broomsticks, talking heads (literally), cobwebs, holographic pictures, skulls, and all manners of magical mayhem in this manor.

10-31-10 Eliana & Camrynn, watch the company you keep!

Dracula even offered my head on a platter…

10-31-10 Dianne's head on a platter...

It was a spooktacular spectacle, for sure! We’ll be back next year to see this haunted haven again!

10-31-10 That is one big black cat!!

Then the fact that the Saints won over the Steelers 20-10 in the Louisiana Super Dome made the night a perfect frightful delight! BOO DAT! I hope your Halloween was just as wonderfully wacky and monstrously magical as ours was! A special thank you and hug to my friend, Karen and her family, for sharing their Halloween festivities with us!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne
