The girls were divided into groups of three. We set up stations in the kitchen where they had blenders and all the ingredients to make Kid Chef Eliana’s “Fresh from the Garden Salsa.”

My favorite part about Kid Chef Eliana’s class was the feedback. Here is a fan email Kid Chef Eliana received after the class:

“Hey you probably don’t know me but I am Mary. I was also at camp girl power (Beecuz You Matter) and I was the completely psycho kid in the first group. Any way I wanted to tell you that you inspire me to become a chef so if you don’t mind can you e mail me whenever you have a new cookbook coming out and tell me where I can get one. Thanks a lot, Mary”

It’s amazing to see Kid Chef Eliana making a difference!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne

Friends:

After my show in Leesville, Louisiana, Eliana and I had to head north to Minden, Louisiana. We decided to stop in Natchitoches, Louisiana, one of our favorite little towns in Louisiana. Eliana was doing research for her next cookbook, Kid Chef Eliana Cooks Louisiana, so we had to eat at the famous Lasyone’s Meat Pie Kitchen and Restaurant. Of course, we ordered meat pies. Mmmmmmmm!

6-1-11 Lasyone's meat pie with dirty rice and gravy

Natchitoches meat pies are a famous Louisiana food and Lasyone’s really does it the best, in my opinion. Their pie is crisp and flaky, and the meat inside is well-seasoned with a bit of a kick but not too spicy. Eliana will be doing a kid version of the meat pie. She even got to speak with two of the Lasyone’s meat pie chefs! They were so nice but they definitely would not tell us their secret recipe! LOL

6-1-11 Kid Chef Eliana bites into a Lasyone's meat pie!

After eating lunch, we decided to walk the riverfront and then do some shopping. I love the beautiful river that runs through Natchitoches. The shops on Front Street are wonderful. Eliana has two new favorite stores: The General Store (Louisiana’s oldest general store established in 1863) because of its EXTENSIVE kitchen wares and Cane River Kitchenware, another kitchen supply store with a demonstration kitchen in the back!

6-1-11 Eliana by the river in Natchitoches

Then Eliana and I decided to do something out of the ordinary. We rented a two-person surrey and rode around town. Boy, was that work! I didn’t realize how tired I would be afterward. The guy told us, “You are a car. You follow car rules.” Well, we didn’t move as fast as a car and it was difficult moving through an uphill four-way stop. REAL cars were honking and waving at us.

Friends:

These past couple of days, I have been touring Louisiana for the library summer reading programs. I visit the library as a special guest, performing my stories and getting kids excited about reading. It’s so much fun. I kicked off the summer at the Vernon Parish Library in Leesville, Louisiana, a good 5 hour drive from New Orleans. I began the program with a couple of draw and tell stories, “The Emperor’s Dragon” and “Catching a Pest in 7 Steps.” The kids loved the stories.

Next, I told a story from Spain called “Medio Pollito.” It is the story of how a weather vane came to be and how a little chick with a lot of attitude learns his lesson! Then it on to a fun song called “My Aunt Came Back.” I ended my program performing the story from my book, There’s a Dragon in the Library, illustrated by Marita Gentry and published by Pelican Publishing Company.

But the finale of the show was Kid Chef Eliana! She came out in full chef uniform and performed her new song, “Cool Kids Cook!” She was adorable!

Friends:

On Saturday afternoon, I had a book event at Barnes & Noble in Metairie, Louisiana. It was a celebration of The Cajun Cornbread Boy.

St. Clement of Rome School had a big crowd! They created wonderful artwork that adorned the wall behind the stage in the children’s section. I performed the story and we had a great time! Afterwards, I taught the kids how to make The Cajun Cornbread Boy’s Louisiana Cookbook, turning a single sheet of paper into a six-page book. Then they designed their own Cajun Cornbread Boy!

Marita and I had two shows. For our first show, we performed The Cajun Cornbread Boy. She drew as I told the story. Love that creative dynamic between us!

We signed books after the show and then performed again a little while later. This time, we did Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach, a favorite amongst our young fans. The kids had such a great time dancing on stage!

Friends:

Today was the last day of my five day PK tour of St. Mary Parish Schools sponsored by the Title 1 Department of St. Mary Parish School Board. I went to Amelia, Louisiana to J.S. Aucoin Elementary. I was greeted warmly by the Aucoin Elementary principal, Mr. Joe Stadalis. Mr. Stadalis was so warm and friendly and he has an amazing rapport with his students!

I had two shows back to back and my first show was for students bussed in from Wyandotte Elementary.

My first story was Mama’s Bayou, performed with a large magnetic story board that is an enlarged page from the book. The animals are placed on the board as I sing the story. It’s so much fun to have students from the audience on stage with me. Full of audience participation, Mama’s Bayou is a great story for the PK and Kindergarten set.

After performing The Cajun Cornbread Boy, we had a blast with The Gigantic Sweet Potato. A shy teacher played the part of Lily Mouse so it was fun to see her act on stage!

My second show was for students from Aucoin Elementary. Aucoin is very diverse with a large Hispanic and Vietnamese student population. I spoke Spanish and even used the few Vietnamese words I knew. I began with Mama’s Bayou and really enjoyed the students I had on stage with me (Hi Eric!).

After Mama’s Bayou, I performed The Cajun Cornbread Boy. The children really enjoy meeting Cajun Cornbread Boy and I do a little skit showing them how spicy he is (he never keeps his pan on). He’s just full of cayenne!

My favorite part of the day was performing Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach for the Aucoin Elementary students. They were such an amazing audience!

3-18-11 Aucoin Elementary students are the best audience!

The boy who played Monsieur Roach was absolutely adorable. His name was Angel and he was so much fun!

3-18-11 Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach with Angel playing the part of the roach

All of the roaches had a great time, singing and dancing!

3-18-11 Monsieur Roach and his friends dance and have a party!

I love having all the “roaches” on stage and the best part is the story’s end, when Madame Poulet slurps up all the roaches. They lie “dead” on the floor, with their “legs” up. It’s hilarious!

After my show, one of the Aucoin students gave me a picture that she drew of Madame Poulet and the roaches. Too cute!

I have two very special people I need to thank for taking care of me all week long. First, thank you to Alecia Rabalais from St. Mary Parish Schools Title 1 Department, who is responsible for my visit. Alecia works so hard to serve the students and teachers of St. Mary Parish. Another thank you to Tiffany Fakier, a consultant with St. Mary Parish School Board, who works with Alecia. Both Alecia and Tiffany really spoiled me this week, helping me unload, set up and pack up my show every day. We completed 14 shows this week. Yay! I am sending both Alecia and Tiffany a virtual hug! Another special thank you to Mr. Moncriffe his generous support of literacy and the arts in St. Mary Parish schools.

I had an amazing time in St. Mary Parish. Thank you to all the principals, teachers, staff and students of St. Mary Parish Schools for hosting my visits! I had GIGANTIC fun! Laissez les bon temps rouler. Let the good times roll!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne
