4-20-10 Performing Story Salsa at the Bay St. Louis Library in Mississippi

4-21-10 Performing Story Salsa at the Bay St. Louis Library in Mississippi

On Wednesday, I performed at the Bay St. Louis Library in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the library and it was rebuilt. The children’s section was breathtaking. It is designed in a fairytale theme complete with Rapunzel in the tower, Peter Rabbit, and a gingerbread house that children can enter and play or read in. I am standing in front of a house with an Acadian porch. The flower beds hide the computers! I did my “Story Salsa” program with 2-4 year olds and we had a ton of fun. They also learned a little bit of Spanish. Magnifico!

Afterward, it was on to the beach, my favorite place in the world!

Sssssh. Don’t tell anyone but I brought Eliana with me since I am going to be on the road for nearly six weeks. I wanted a day to spend quality time with my baby girl. We had so much walking in the sand, fun frolicking in the water, and collecting sea treasures. Eliana built a mini sand castle and we hung out, just enjoying each other’s company. Eliana, Mommy loves you times infinity!!

Big cheers for Jamie Elston, who brought me to the library, and to Jessica, the children’s librarian at Bay St. Louis Library. Muchas gracias! Thank you very much!

Until next time…

1-19-10 Performing for Quitman Lower Elementary 1st & 2nd grades

1-19-10 Performing for Quitman Lower Elementary 1st & 2nd grades

Friends:

Today I had the privilege of doing a school visit and a professional development workshop for Quitman Lower Elementary in Quitman, MS.

1-19-10 A teacher plays a lion in "Anansi Shares Wisdom w the World"

Angie Ledbetter, the Assistant Principal, was my contact person. My GPS misguided me to the wrong side of town and I called Angie on her cell phone in a panic. She was sweet and guided me in and greeted me upon my arrival. She told me that Carol Satterfield, a teacher and big “Fan of Dianne,” drove all the way from North Mississippi to see me and was spending the day at the school. How cool is that?!

Right before my first show, the Principal, Mr. Bounds, greeted me, welcomed me to the school, and introduced me to the students. I performed 2 shows. The first show was for pre-K and K. The second was for 1st and 2nd grades. It was so much fun and the students had a blast!

1-19-10 Students on stage playing roaches in "Madame Poulet & Monsieur Roach"

After my second show, Angie and another teacher, Tootsie, took me to lunch. We ate at a local restaurant, Skidmore’s Old Tyme Butcher Shop and Grill. They served delicious hot plates. I had fried chicken, cornbread, mac and cheese, green beans and peach cobbler. Talk about a Southern cooked meal!

Lunch was so much fun. We laughed and laughed. Everyone that walked in the door could have been a book character! When we were finished eating, Tootsie said, “Now we have to clean our table and scrape off our plates.” It was like a flashback to junior high. So I took my dishes to the slop bucket and scraped off my plate. There was a big sign above the table where the bin for the dirty dishes was. It said, “Please do not throw your metal forks into the trash.”

Then Tootsie told me to read the fine print. Underneath that it said, “Throw away your spit cup please.” I’m not making this up! Better be careful… The white styrofoam cup you think is your drink might actually be someone’s spit cup! Eeeew. Of course, I HAD to take a picture!

After lunch, we went back to school and I took a tour down the halls. The schools is one that really works to integrate the arts and the walls show it! There was art everywhere!

A “Learning is Fun” attitude permeates the school’s atmosphere, from the administration to the staff to students. Quitman Lower Elementary’s teachers are enthusiastic and committed to their classrooms.

In the afternoon, the teachers came into the multipurpose room for my Story Fest workshop. It was so much fun sharing my signature story theater techniques with them. They were such great participants!

They really embraced the story theater warm-up exercises, including Mr. Bounds, the school’s principal!

I enjoyed their energy and willingness to step out of their comfort zones.

When we were finished with the warm-up exercises, I divided the group in half and they created their own story theater. One group performed “The Turtle Who Could Not Stop Talking.”

The other group performed my brand new story theater script, adapted from my new book, Mama’s Bayou.

Afterwards, I signed tons of books and gave all the teachers reading posters. Every student received bookmarks. I really enjoyed my day at Quitman Lower Elementary. Thank you so much, Angie Ledbetter, for inviting me to Quitman. I love you and your school!

Tomorrow, I spend the day at Quitman Upper Elementary. Until next time…

7-8-09 The crowd at St. Martin Library

7-8-09 The crowd at St. Martin Library

Friends:

Today, Eliana and I were in St. Martin and Gautier, Mississippi. Our first show at St. Martin was for a very large crowd of about 125 people. I even had fans from yesterday’s shows come again because they loved it so much. So I told a short little string story just for them. The audience was eager and full of energy. I really loved telling stories to this group!

In between shows, Eliana and I had lunch with our friend, Brent and his son, Devin. We ate at New Orleans Style Po-Boys but ended up eating delicious Vietnamese cuisine instead of po-boys. Thanks for lunch, Brent!

Our afternoon show was in Gautier, Mississippi. The audience was smaller than our morning show but nevertheless enthusiastic. They loved receiving the 6 page books that accompany my story, “The King’s Advisor.”

I had a long line of children who requested my autographs on those little books. Eliana signed autographs too, which totally excited her. Eliana, you are a little star!

After our show, I had to pick up a new wireless headset Shure microphone (mine had broken earlier in the week) from the Mississippi Music Store. They were so nice and provided incredible customer service! Thanks Donnie & Chris! It will be so nice to be hands-free again!

Then it was time to head back to our hotel, The Imperial Palace in Biloxi. I promised Eliana we would swim. Yesterday, the pool was closed because of weather. The day before, the rain made the rooftop pool too cool for swimming in the late afternoon. Fortunately, Mother Nature cooperated and it was perfect weather for a late afternoon swim. The pool is massive, with a jumbo TV screen at one end!

Eliana had a wonderful time. She is really becoming quite the little swimmer!

It was the perfect end for a perfect day. Tomorrow is our last day in Mississippi. :( While it will be nice to return home, we have had such a wonderful time in the Magnolia State.

Until next time…

Friends:

Today, Eliana and I began our tour in the Jackson-George Regional Libraries in Mississippi. We met Mary Ann Louviere, our gracious hostess and the children’s services coordinator for the region at a park and ride off I-10 and followed her to our first library in Lucedale. The audience was so much fun! We had a big crowd of enthusiastic children. After going through two microphones, the third one was a charm. Even when your microphones go out in the middle of the show, the show must go on, and it did!

Afterwards, the kids lined up for autographs and book signings. Here I am, signing a gigantic poster that the library designed and gave away as a prize. It was designed by Rex Bridges, the library system’s PR coordinator. Thank you for making me look so good, Rex!

They loved The Cajun Cornbread Boy! Between the two shows, I am nearly sold out of books! I have five left for the rest of the week!

Afterwards, we stayed for some fun. Eliana joined the teens for an end-of-summer karaoke party. She sang and even joined the group in a rendition of High School Musical’s “We’re All In This Together!”

Special thanks to Cindy and Micki for your gracious hospitality! Thank you, Mary Ann, for inviting me to the Jackson-George Regional Libraries. We are loving our visit and look forward to the rest of our week on the Mississippi Gulf Coast!

7-5-09 Welcome to West Ship Island

7-5-09 Welcome to West Ship Island

Friends:

My family and I took a day trip to West Ship Island, located 11 miles off the coast in the Mississippi Sound. To get there, you have to take an hour ferry ride.

It was a nice ride across the sound. We even saw dolphins and a dredging station that keeps the channel deep enough for ships to pass through.

Once we docked, we walked a long pier leading to the other side of the island. I saw a fisherman snipping the barb from a stingray he caught right by the pier.

We took a tour of Fort Massachusetts. West Ship Island has an amazing history and was once one of the first line of military defenses for the United States. After our tour, we headed for the beach, walking the never-ending stretch of boardwalk. But the walk was worth it. The white and black sand intermingled on the pretty beach. The water, sea green in color, was pretty clear, warm and shallow. The waves were minimal.

There were tons of sheephead fish and they were not afraid of us at all! I even saw a stingray. We played in the surf and sand all day. I amassed quite a sunburn although I reapplied my sunscreen several times. Eliana and the girls caught a hermit crab.

It was so much fun. Playing in the sun sure does take its toll. Look at Eliana!

We had an awesome time and highly recommend West Ship Island as a family destination.

Friends:

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of being a featured speaker at the Mississippi Library Commission conference. The conference was for children’s librarians in Mississippi public libraries. It was a fun busy conference! The conference was held at the Cabot Lodge Hotel in Jackson, Mississippi.

When I arrived, I was immediately invited to join the librarians for dinner. They had a buffet of fajitas set up. Yum! Afterwards, I joined the librarians for a YA movie night. We watched Juno. Following that, I met another client for a cocktail! It was a busy night.

I rose early Thursday morning and had breakfast with the group. Then I attended Vicki Cobb‘s presentation. Vicki is the children’s book author of many wonderful non-fiction science books, books that get kids excited about science. Vicki was a fabulous presenter, providing many hands-on science activities for the librarians, who loved every minute of it! Here is Vicki demonstrating a science principle of wind using a leaf blower and toilet paper. How fun!

When Vicki’s presentation was finished, there was a fun game. Each table of librarians was a team. Each team had a “sculptor.” I was the sculptor for my team. Using Play Dough, we had to sculpt for our team using clues we were handed on a small piece of paper. Can you guess what book this was supposed to be?

If you guessed, “Harry Potter,” you are right! See the sorting hat, golden snitch, and the Nimbus 2000 broom?

My two presentations were both scheduled after lunch. My first workshop was “Tell Along Tales,” in which I taught the librarians how to tell audience participatory stories. I also taught them important audience management techniques.

It was tons of fun! Thank you, Vicki, for staying for my Tell Along Tales presentation!

This is a picture of Jamie Elstrom. She worked at Jefferson Parish Library, my local library, years ago when I first got my start in storytelling. Jamie likes to say that she saw me “grow up.” It’s true! Jamie is so tech savvy that she booked me right on the spot using her laptop during a break. I’ll see you in Summer 2009, Jamie!

After Tell-Along Tales, I did my “Story Fest” workshop, instructing the librarians how to use story theater in the library. This is a picture of a group doing some role playing warm-up exercises. They are portraying a bus driver on a bus with a group of very naughty children. OMG! The bus driver is blind-folded! Hahahaha!

This next group is role-playing a Mardi Gras parade. They had to portray a float, the parade king, and the Mardi Gras revelers. Can you tell who is who?

We had so much fun in my workshops. These librarians were enthusiastic, lively, and one of the most fun groups I’ve worked with. They even gave me a beautiful gift at the end of my presentations – a standing ovation! Wow! I was so honored. A special thank you to Kathy Buntin for inviting me to participate in the conference.

After my workshop, I went to my room to rest for a while. Then, as if the full day’s activities weren’t enough, I joined a group of librarians to see the midnight premiere of Twilight (I read all 4 books by Stephenie Meyers). We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. (Mara, I can’t sit next to you anymore! Mai Tai! still LMAO)

Mississippi Librarians, thank you so much for having me at your conference. I can’t wait to see y’all again!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne
