School Visit

5-2-11 Kids and characters... what fun!

Friends:

This past Monday, I was the guest author at Berwick Elementary for the start of their Louisiana Week Celebration. I saw two groups, K-2 and 3-5. They were so much fun!

I told the story of The Cajun Cornbread, The Gigantic Sweet Potato, and Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach.

5-4-11 Gage, a 5th grader full of personality, plays Monsieur Roach, who is afraid of Madame Poulet!

I even told “The Ghost of Jean Lafitte” to the older group. Boy, did we have a blast! Afterwards, they treated me to lunch from Castellano’s, a fabulous family-owned Italian restaurant. Then it was time to sign books! They brought the students in by class…

The Berwick Elementary students were so well-behaved and polite!! Mr. Russo and Ms. Armato, you have done a fantastic job with these kids!!

5-2-11 Awwww! How sweet and spicy!

One little girl even asked me to autograph her maraca from Cozumel, Mexico (Yes, I have been there!). Thanks, Julie!

5-2-11 Julie asked me to sign her maraca... Ole'!

It was an amazing visit and I really loved the staff and the students of Berwick Elementary. A special thank you to Mr. Russo, Ms. Armato, Micah, Penny, Cathy, Andrea, Kitt, and all the teachers who were sooo sweet! Berwick Elementary rocks!

Friends:

On Friday, April 1, 2011, I visited Hammond Eastside Elementary, courtesy of my friend and first grade teacher, Michelle Cardaronella. Here I am performing The Gigantic Sweet Potato with students from my first show.

I saw two groups of students in different grade level seatings. I love performing Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach with the students and they had so much fun!

I love seeing them on the ground with their little roach legs sticking up at the end of the story. It’s hilarious!

I performed Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach with both groups and I love the expression of this third grade student, who played the part of Monsieur Roach!

After my shows, it was time to sign books for the students. There were long lines of students waiting to have their books signed. It’s always a treat for me to interact with the students one on one during a book signing!

I made sure that all the students received bookmarks and that all the teachers received reading posters. Thank you, Michelle, for such an enjoyable visit!

Until next time…

2-11-10 Dianne performs "Princess Pat" with two helpers

Friends:

Today, I performed “Fairytale Fever” at Norco Elementary K-3 in Norco, Louisiana for their literacy week. It was so much fun and very interactive. I began with my original adaptation of “The Frog Prince,” a cute story in which an ugly princess falls in love with a warty old frog. Next, I did a song, “The Princess Pat,” bringing two students onto the stage to help. Then I did my “Goldie Locks Story Rap.” The students provide the beat by hitting their laps with their hands and clapping their hands together. I ended with a “spooky” story by request and told my ever popular, “The Ghost of Mabel Gable.” Both the teachers and the students fell over laughing. When I ended the show, the students clapped, cheered, whistled and yelled for more.

This is my second year at Norco and I enjoyed it so much. The students and teachers just love to have a good time. While the students were filing out, I played the Saints song, “Black and Gold to da Super Bowl!” and everyone started dancing, including the teachers. I gave every teacher a Cajun Cornbread Boy reading poster for their classrooms. What a great day!

Unfortunately, I had to drive to Lake Charles, Louisiana in horrendous weather conditions, through sleet and heavy rain but I made it to my hotel room safely. Tomorrow morning, I perform my Jambalaya program for T.S. Cooley Magnet school in Lake Charles. I love my job!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne

10-14-09 Akers Elementary

10-14-09 Akers Elementary

Friends:

I am so excited to tell you about my visit to this school. Akers Elementary is the school where I attended junior high – 7th and 8th grades. It is here that I had class with my favorite teacher of all time, Karleen Good, my junior high language arts teacher.

The visit was arranged by Peggie Anderson, Akers’ librarian and a wonderfully sweet woman who ensured my visit was nothing short of perfection. I was first taken to the cafeteria, where I spotted this cool sign on the front of the stage, made by the fourth graders. Wow!

I was introduced to Mike Sweeney, the principal, who welcomed me to Akers. It was surreal, being there for the first time since I graduated from the school nearly 26 years ago! The cafeteria had not changed – the smell nearly took my breath away, not because it was a bad smell, but because it sent me backwards in time to my 7th grade self!

There were signs all over the school, welcoming me. This one is for book orders.

Then there was the GINORMOUS sign in the library – it was once hanging outside but it had to be moved because of the wet weather.

I did several assemblies for PK through 8 grades. It felt so good, being able to come back and share with the students who were sitting in the very seats I once sat in! The special quality about Akers is that all the students are military dependents. They are the children of a parent or parents who serve in the armed forces. My father was in the Navy and NAS Lemoore, where Akers is located, is the largest Naval base in the United States.

Earlier that morning, I woke up hoarse and in a panic. How could I lose my voice on such an important day?! Not only was I visiting my alma mater, I was also dedicating my book Scared Silly: 25 Tales to Tickle and Thrill to my junior high English teacher, Mrs. Good. Fortunately, I was able to get through my shows and the students really enjoyed themselves.

For lunch, I was treated to a potluck. All the teachers took the time to make the most delicious dishes… There was even a welcome greeting in the Teacher’s Lounge for me!! How cool is that? (I’d never been allowed in the Akers Teachers Lounge before… LOL) I felt so special (and FULL)!

I even got to visit with some 4th grade classes. Such great kids with astute questions! A very special thank you to all the 4th graders for the lovely signs, especially the one in the cafeteria and the cool GINORMOUS handprint sign in the library. You guys rock!

After my assemblies were over, I headed back to my hotel to freshen up. Akers held a very special dinner, serving chicken in honor of Madame Poulet and cornbread in honor of The Cajun Cornbread Boy. But this dinner was really about honoring Mrs. Good and dedicating my book to her. I did a short slide show and then told a couple of stories. Afterwards, I signed books. Unfortunately, in the excitement of the evening, I forgot to have someone take pictures of this auspicious event. But here is a photo of the incredible newspaper article that appeared in the local paper, The Sentinel.

I did get a picture with one of my adorable fans from Akers, Conrad. What a cutie! I also met some of the wonderful parents of the Akers students. Thank you so much for your support!

Akers was absolutely amazing. Thank you so much to Peggie Anderson, Karleen Good, Mike Sweeney, the teachers, the office staff, the cafeteria staff, and the students of Akers Elementary. It was a phenomenal visit – definitely a high in my career as an author! I hope to return again!!

Here’s to you, Karleen Good, for being such a life-changing woman, for caring enough to dedicate thirty years of your life to teaching. You planted a seed. It grew. It blossomed. Enjoy its fruit!

Until next time…

9-24-09 Dianne with PK-2 Hillsboro Elem, TN

9-24-09 Dianne with PK-2 Hillsboro Elem, TN

Friends:

I have just returned from a whirlwind trip to Tennessee. I had an incredible time as the guest author at Hillsboro Elementary School in Hillsboro, Tennessee. The children were so excited to meet an author! Nancy Dickerson Dickinson, the librarian, was a wonderful hostess. She picked me up from the Nashville airport on Wednesday evening and then took me to dinner at O’Charley’s, where I had a delicious meal.

On Thursday morning, Nancy picked me up from my hotel and whisked me away to her school. The children were so enthusiastic. Nancy did a great job preparing them for my visit, sharing my books with them and telling them all about me.

9-24-09 Dianne and "Roaches" dancing in the performance of "Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach"

I performed three shows, first seeing grades PK, 1 and 2. Next, I saw grades 3 through 5. Finally, I saw the kindergarteners, who came back from a field trip to the county fair.

I performed my new book, Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach, “Peanut Butter and Jelly Jam” song, and “The Ghost of Mable Gable.” We even had time for a little Q&A. The stories were a hit and the students had a ton of fun. Look at these happy faces!

I also did book signings for all the students in each grade who bought books.

I had a marvelous time at Hillsboro Elementary School!! I can’t wait to return… Here’s what Nancy had to say about me (she posted this to a librarians’ listserv, LM_net):

“I had the most amazing author visit this past Thursday, and I have to tell you all about it! New Orleans author/storyteller Dianne de Las Casas came to present at the annual conference of the Tennessee Assn. of School Librarians, and I had her come to my school on the day before the conference began. She was so wonderful to work with, and my students and teachers and I had the time of our lives. I don’t know when we’ve laughed together so much! Her new book from Pelican Publishing, Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach, is adorable. Great story and great illustrations. But, oh, when she tells it, it comes to life and is hilarious! She was also a fantastic presenter at our conference. We all had so much fun in her storytelling workshop and I’m sure we could have spent a whole day with her, learning great technique and having loads of fun! I was the hero of the school Thursday with both the kids and the teachers. Book fair money well spent!”

I am running out of stupendous adjectives to describe my visit to Hillsboro! Thank you, Nancy, the teachers, staff and students of Hillsboro Elementary. You are terrific, marvelous, cool, spectacular, and incredible! I <3 U and hope to return some day soon!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne
