Friends:

This past Saturday, I performed at the NAS Belle Chasse Library for their summer reading program, which was themed “A Mid-Summer Knight’s Read.” It was a special performance for me because my mom, who retired last month, worked on base for many years, my step-dad still works there, and I am a certified Navy brat! Thank you to Chaney Foote, who brought me to the base library. We had a small but super-fun crowd and I LOVE the castle and knight decorations that Chaney put up! The library was so cute!

I told my draw and tell story, “The Emperor’s Dragon,” from my book, Handmade Tales. Also from my book, I told another draw and tell story, “Catching a Pest in 7 steps.”

Friends:

This past Friday, I performed at the St. Bernard Parish Library for the summer reading program. I opened with a gift to Janet Perez, the children’s librarian. I gave her a set of poi balls from my trip to Hawaii. Poi balls are balls at the end of a long yard rope that are twirled in patterns. They are used by the Maori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand), which is part of the Polynesian Triangle. Janet tried her hand at the poi balls and did a great job!

I apologize for the quality of the pictures. The backlighting made it hard for my little digital camera to take good pictures. My first story was “The Emperor’s Dragon” from my Handmade Tales book. After I drew the story, I showed them a Chinese dragon marionette that I picked up from my travels to Hawaii.

The next story I told was another draw and tell story from my Handmade Tales book called “Catching a Pest in 7 Steps.”

I did a fun traditional song, “My Aunt Came Back” and then told the story of “Medio Pollito,” a tale from Spain in which a half-chick with a full attitude does not listen to his mom. It’s a fun story with lots of audience participation. I ended with my book, There’s a Dragon in the Library.

My middle story was “Medio Pollito,” which in Spanish means “Little Half Chick.” It’s the story of how the weather vane came to be. Then it was time for a song: “My Aunt Came Back.”

My last story was from my book, There’s a Dragon in the Library. I had helpers from the audience participate in the story. The little boy who played the main character, Max, was hilarious. His name is Kayus. My rapport with the audience was magical and I had such an amazing time with them!

Kid Chef Eliana closed out the show with a performance of her new song, “Cool Kids Cook!” She is so adorable! Afterward, we sold and signed tons of books, especially Eliana!

At the end of the show, I put on some dance music and some kids from the audience showed everyone their moves. Check out Kayus!! He was the most incredible break dancer!

After the show, it was time for our annual tradition: lunch at Moody’s Place! Moody’s is this “hole in the wall” restaurant that serves stick-to-your-ribs Southern soul food – fried chicken, fried pork chops, country fried steak, turnip greens, purple hull peas (black eyed peas), yams, and pies that will make you dream about them for days!!

This is the restaurant that introduced me to “hot water cornbread.” Cornbread that is baked and then fried! But it sure tastes good!

Jennifer Heard is the children’s librarian who introduced us to Moody’s. Now we have to eat there every time we go to Minden! Look at the two Jennifers! (Jennifer Heard is on the left.)

Eliana even got to talk to Ms. Moody for a little bit. Yes, Moody’s Place is one of our favorite Southern cooking restaurants in Louisiana!

After lunch, it was time to head to Springhill, Louisiana for our second show. Springhill is on the Arkansas border. It’s waay north! Again, I told my draw and tell stories. When I did “My Aunt Came Back,” the audience had a great time getting silly!

“Medio Pollito” was a hit with the Springhill Crowd. They even learned a little Spanish!

When I performed There’s a Dragon in the Library, Zach was my little helper that played “Max” in the story. We had a good time!

Following our show, we headed across the street to AmJenn’s Soups and Scoops restaurant. We both enjoyed cold Coke floats. We even got to sign dollar bills that were placed on the ceiling! Cool!

Eliana and I had a MARVELOUS time in Webster Parish. Webster Parish is just full of good people – we had such wonderful audiences and the library staff is just out of this world!!! So a world of thanks to our friends in Minden and Springhill! See you down the road…

Friends:

It was a great tour in Winn Parish. Our first show was for a Title I program at a local school in Winnfield, Louisiana. Though the audience was smaller than in past years, they had a great time.

Our second show was in Dodson, Louisiana. The show was held in a high school gym, next door to the library because the library is small. Our brand new CD player stopped working but thankfully, Amy Deen, our fabulous hostess, rescued us and brought one from home.

The next day, June 24, we were at the main library in Winnfield, Louisiana in the morning. We had a big crowd and everyone loved the show.

Thank you very much to Amy Deen and Mary Doherty of Winn Parish Libraries. Thank you also to all the fantastic librarians and patrons at all the branches. We had so much fun “splashing” into Summer Reading with you!

Until next time…

Eliana and I began with a Hula called, “The Little Brown Girl.” We taught the Hula moves of the chorus to the audience so they could follow along. We did three shows over the course of two days.

6-9-10 Eliana and I demonstrate the moves for The Little Brown Girl

Then I told the story of “Maui Tames the Sun.” In my third show, I had such fun kids on stage. They really got into their roles and were so great!

Eliana is always so cute when she dances Tahitian. I love her costume and so does the audience! They always say, “Ooh and aah!”

We always end the show with a Hula in which everyone participates. We bring people on stage and no one is immune… LOL Eliana and I teach them “The Hukilau,” a traditional Hawaiian Hula that all children in Hawaii learn.

After our last show, Eliana and I had time to tour Natchitoches. We ate at Lasyone’s, a restaurant famous for its meat pies. They were so good, we brought frozen ones home!

The river that runs through Natchitoches is so pretty. Natchitoches is a quaint and quiet town during the summer. They are famous for their “Festival of Lights” celebration in December. The town has been featured on HGTV and the Travel Channel. Natchitoches is a charming little town.
Friends:

Eliana (my ten year old daughter) and I started our summer tour, traveling all over Louisiana and performing in the public libraries promoting Summer Reading. This year, the collaborative Summer Reading theme is “Splash into Summer! Read!” To coincide with the theme, I created my show, “Aloha Tales,” a program of Hawaiian stories, Hula dancing, and Polynesian dancing.

6-2-10 Eliana dances with poi balls

The show begins with Eliana and I dancing a Hula called, “The Little Brown Girl.” Then I tell the story, “How Maui Tames the Sun” with lots of audience participation. There are several quick costume changes and Eliana does quite a bit of talking and dancing! After Eliana and I perform with poi balls, there is a quick change for me and I emerge in a red traditional muu muu. I tell the story of “The Volcano Goddess.”

6-1-10 Dianne de Las Casas tells the story of Pele, the Volcano Goddess

Then comes one of my favorite parts of the show. Eliana emerges in her Tahitian costume, eliciting oohs and ahs from the audience, and dances a traditional Tahitian dance called “Paea.” This is a dance I used to perform as a child!

6-1-10 Eliana dances Tahitian

I then demonstrate puilis, Hula implements that are long slatted sticks made from bamboo. I ask audience members to try the puilis. It’s lots of fun for everyone.

6-3-10 Dianne helps a little girl use puilis

The very end of the show is another one of my favorite parts! We bring audience members up on stage, dress them in grass skirts and flower leis, and teach them how to dance “The Hukilau,” a traditional Hula. I also have the audience stand up, learn the moves, and dance with us. Everyone enjoys it.

6-2-10 Audience members learn how to dance The Hukilau

Eliana and I had a blast in Evangeline Parish. We ate great food, met warm and friendly people, and had fun with all the kids in the libraries. The library system has such a wonderfully supportive community. We look forward to returning one day! I did discover one of my book characters hanging out in Evangeline Parish — it was Madame Poulet!

After Moss Point, we headed to Pascagoula for our final show in Mississippi and our final show of the summer. We ate lunch in historic downtown Pascagoula at a casual restaurant called The Cabana. Both Eliana and I had the Mojo pulled pork sandwich. Yum!

Friends:

Today, Eliana and I began our tour in the Jackson-George Regional Libraries in Mississippi. We met Mary Ann Louviere, our gracious hostess and the children’s services coordinator for the region at a park and ride off I-10 and followed her to our first library in Lucedale. The audience was so much fun! We had a big crowd of enthusiastic children. After going through two microphones, the third one was a charm. Even when your microphones go out in the middle of the show, the show must go on, and it did!

Afterwards, the kids lined up for autographs and book signings. Here I am, signing a gigantic poster that the library designed and gave away as a prize. It was designed by Rex Bridges, the library system’s PR coordinator. Thank you for making me look so good, Rex!

One little boy told me that I was “prettier in person” while another boy told me I was “prettier than a rose.” How sweet is that? Here I am with those little “Romeos!” Thank you, boys! I <3 U!

After lunch with Mary Ann at Pockets Diner (a restaurant and pool hall with the best burgers), we headed to East Central Library. The crowd was smaller but nonetheless enthusiastic and fun.

They loved The Cajun Cornbread Boy! Between the two shows, I am nearly sold out of books! I have five left for the rest of the week!

Afterwards, we stayed for some fun. Eliana joined the teens for an end-of-summer karaoke party. She sang and even joined the group in a rendition of High School Musical’s “We’re All In This Together!”

Special thanks to Cindy and Micki for your gracious hospitality! Thank you, Mary Ann, for inviting me to the Jackson-George Regional Libraries. We are loving our visit and look forward to the rest of our week on the Mississippi Gulf Coast!

Until next time…

Warmly, Dianne
